I only ever watched a few episodes of Sex and the City. I found them mildy amusing, but not enough to keep watching every week. But I went to see the movie last night with some friends and loved it. I laughed and laughed and laughed, and even cried once or twice. I hardly ever cry at movies.
Yes, the dialogue is anvilish, and the conclusion felt too pat. But it's not the Jossverse, and I wasn't expecting flawless writing or deep meaning. I was hoping for fun, and I got way more fun than I expected. :) I'm sure the diehard fans on my flist will love it even more than I did.
On another subject, last night I dreamt that John Barrowman and Jamie Bamber had shower sex and put it on DVD for all of us to watch. WHICH WE DID, OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. |

So it's no secret that I've been feeling like shit for the past two months, and some of the stuff I've read on LJ recently hasn't done anything for my mental or physical health. But. The last couple of days, you guys have reminded me how awesome you all are. I just wanted to say thanks for that. It makes me feel a whole lot better, about everything. *hugs* |

| | thankful | ] | Happy Birthday to one of my favourite people on the planet, the fabulous, talented and ever-thoughtful chrisleeoctaves. Fandom has given me many gifts, darling, but none that I value as much as your friendship. You are a beautiful human being, inside and out, and I hope you have a day that is as wonderful and loving as you are. *smooch* |

| Rec Me Some Funny, Please? |
[May. 11th, 2008|02:06 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | blah | ] | Can anyone recommend some good funny books? I need fun, cheery stuff to read. Ficton or non-fiction equally welcome.
In an effort to cheer myself up, I rented a couple of comedies this weekend. One of them was The Producers - not the original 1968 version, but the 2005 musical remake. And who did I see belting out "Springtime for Hitler" but a bleached-blond John Barrowman, leading the gayest goosestep that ever gayed? It was worth the rental price for that moment alone.
I saw the original 1968 movie, and I liked this version so much better. For one thing, the whole idea lends itself better to a musical production. For another, the director found a way to take the story outside, instead of shooting half the movie inside an office. Also, I love Nathan Lane beyond reason. And Will Ferrell is hysterical as the fanatical Nazi playwright. "I haven't been this happy since we crushed Poland!" Hahahahaha.
Parts of the movie are just dumb more than funny. But other parts are howlingly ridiculous. The Producers, as its lead character says, is guaranteed to offend people of all races, religions, genders, culture and sexual orientation. Yet it's so ludicrously over the top that all I could do was laugh. Maybe the Nazis would find it offensive, but then they've never been known for their sense of humour.
Anyway... books. Funny books. Thanks in advance to anyone who can rec some. <3 |

| | optimistic | ] | Today I wore a short-sleeved shirt and barbecued and ate my supper outside.
It's 9 p.m. and it's still not completely dark yet.
I am nearly in tears with the summer of it all.
Also, I ate half a hamburger and some mashed potatoes for dinner without my stomach seizing up. Tomorrow, maybe half a slice of pizza?
Oh, solids. How I have missed you! |

| But I like black people, too! Just, not as much as whites. |

| | pissed off | ] | If someone wrote in her LJ, "I must confess it--I don't like black people as much as I like whites," she would immediately be labelled a racist.
Yet when someone writes, "I must confess it--I don't like women as much as I like men," she somehow thinks she's not a misogynist. Because she likes women, honest! Just, you know. Not as much.
Yes, I am concerned about the status of women. Not just in impoverished countries, but everywhere. And this is why. |

chrisleeoctaves once made fun of me for having copies of Scientific American in my bathroom. But hey, who doesn't want to read about environmental development issues while they're on the can? I thought this op-ed piece was interesting: Look closely at the violence in Afghanistan, Chad, Ethiopia, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia and Sudan—one finds tribal and often pastoralist communities struggling to survive deepening ecological crises. Water scarcity, in particular, has been a source of territorial conflict when traditional systems of land management fail in the face of rising populations and temperatures and declining rainfall. Washington looks at many of these clashes and erroneously sees Islamist ideology at the core. Our political leaders fail to realize that other Islamic populations are far more stable economically, politically and socially—and that the root of the crisis in the dryland countries is not Islam but extreme poverty and environmental stress. Now, this is an oversimplification. War, colonial history and internal power struggles certainly have something to do with these conflicts, and with the rise of radical Islam. The Taliban wouldn't have gained such a foothold in Afghanistan if the Soviet Union hadn't spent 20 years trying to run roughshod over the place. But I agree with the author's conclusion: The only reliable way to peace in the vast and troubled drylands will be through sustainable development.
Gee. Economic prosperity is more effective at bringing long-term peace than military might. Who'da thunk? Oh, right: George Marshall. |

Drabble: "Hell in the Concrete Jungle" Connor/Spike 100 words Written for the btvs_ats_100 community. This week's challenge is "firsts."
The first time Connor kisses another man, it isn’t a man at all.
Spike’s lips aren’t warm, exactly; yet they’re anything but cold. They’re langorous and dangerous, pink like jungle flowers, things that steam and sting. The kiss burns through him, zinging down his spine to where his hands rest on Spike’s hips. Connor yanks their bodies together, hard, and the breath escapes his lungs in a huff of air. No air passes Spike’s lips. Connor closes his eyes to the sun over his shoulder, to the moon that never sets. This trip to hell is better than his last. |

| | loved | ] | I have been happily single for a very long time, and so I wish all my friends a Happy Valentine's Day. Love doesn't have to mean hand-holding and romance. It can be the gift you send to a friend, or the hug you give your dog.
So if you're single this Valentine's Day, do something nice for yourself. Have a candlelit dinner in the tub. Send your best friend flowers. Eat chocolates for supper. (I know I'm going to!) And tell everyone on your flist how much you love them. Because we are SO worth loving.
I <3 you all.
Sooper-seekrit message to my fellow Torchwood fans: I haven't seen eps 5 and 6 yet, so please don't spoil me! I look forward to squeeing/gasping/speculating in your journals later. :) |
